2020 saw the release of Blackbird, the debut single from hotly tipped US vocalist Lady Blackbird. A stirring interpretation of Nina Simone’s powerful civil rights anthem, the track is imbued with passion, enthusiasm and hope and signals the arrival of a revelatory new voice on the global jazz scene. Whilst reflecting influences as varied as Billie Holiday, Gladys Knight, Tina Turner and Chaka Khan, Los Angeles-based Lady Blackbird (aka Marley Munroe) possesses a style and emotional intensity that is very much her own. Her forthcoming debut album Black Acid Soul, which was produced by Chris Seefried and features a stellar band including former Miles Davis pianist Deron Johnson, presents a wholly fresh take on the jazz vocal idiom from an artist blessed with a bold, un-mistakeable voice. Her debut LP is due in 2021.
